THE TESLA POWERTRAIN

In Tesla’s advanced electric powertrain, the accelerator pedal commands the inverter to extract DC power from the battery for delivery to the AC induction motor. The motor generates up to 415 Nm of torque that powers the rear wheels by way of a fixed gear reduction. Arranging the drive inverter, motor, and single-
speed gearbox in one tight package achieves unprecedented efficiencies in conductivity and thermal management.
The powertrain, tucked between the rear wheels, uses energy three times more efficiently than a gas-burning engine.
ACCELERATION
INSTANT GOUnlike the internal combustion engine with hundreds of moving pieces that spark, pump, belch, and groan, the Tesla motor has only one moving piece: the rotor. As a result, Model S acceleration is instantaneous, like flipping a switch. Hit the accelerator. In 5.6 seconds Model S is traveling 60 miles per hour, without hesitation and without a drop of gasoline.
DRIVING DYNAMICS
AGILITY AND GRACEThe Model S suspension system was developed for the unique architecture of Model S. It works in harmony with the rigid and light Tesla platform to provide precision handling and optimum comfort. Unencumbered by an engine, the lightweight front suspension optimizes wheel control. The rear multi-link suspension is designed to seamlessly integrate with the powertrain.
AIR SUSPENSION
The optional air suspension automatically responds to speed and road conditions. As Model S accelerates, it lowers the vehicle for optimized aerodynamics and handling. Lower or raise Model S using the touchscreen to unload cargo when parked.
POWER STEERING
Electronic Power Steering automatically reacts to driving conditions to stay comfortable and responsive at all speeds. The feedback is so precise, you'll feel constantly connected to the road.
Model S sets the bar for electric driving range. Each of the three battery options achieve unprecedented range, the largest delivering 300 miles per charge. Tesla starts with about seven thousand automotive-grade Lithium-ion cells and assembles them into a liquid-cooled battery strategically positioned in the floor of the car. The Model S battery builds on the Tesla Roadster’s pioneering architecture and more than 15 million miles of real world driving.
Far, Farther, Farthest: Model S has three battery range options. The 160 mile battery is standard.

PANORAMIC ROOF
LET THE LIGHT INWhen closed, the panoramic roof appears as a single sheet of lightweight glass, contributing to the unique, streamlined physique of Model S. With one simple swipe on the touchscreen, it opens wide to provide a “top-down” drive experience.
The roof’s infrared coating reduces solar load to 20 percent, making the panoramic roof an option
for owners in all climates.
THE KEY
WORTHY OF THE CARProgrammable for individual drivers, the unique Tesla key is easily sensed by the vehicle, loading preferred settings like seat, steering wheel, and mirror positions. As you approach, the key commands the door handle to slide out to greet you. With it in your pocket, Model S turns on as you buckle in to the driver’s seat.
DOOR HANDLES
OPTIMIZE & DELIGHTEvery millimeter of Model S is designed to reduce drag. The door handles are no exception. When not in use, the handles retract into the body, streamlining airflow. When a driver approaches the vehicle with the key, the handles slide out and unlatch with a simple touch. LED lights illuminate the pocket of each handle and the ground below for nighttime visibility.
