Smart Grid Tech

The Smart Grid Technology represents the power generation slution for electricity supply network. Next-generation of electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure will be better able to handle possible bidirection energy flows, allowing for distributed generation such as from photovoltaic panels on building roofs, wind turbines, the use of fuel cells, charging to/from the batteries of electric cars, pumped hydroelectric power, and other sources to interact in a logic and programatic way. The smart grid makes use of technologies that improve fault detection and allow self-healing of the electric network without the intervention of technicians. Thus will ensure more reliable supply of electricity, and will reduce vulnerability to natural disasters or external attacks.

On March 5th, 2011 Florida Power and Light Company (FPL, Juno Beach, Florida, U.S.) celebrated the commissioning of a 75MW plant that combines concentrating solar power (CSP) and natural gas generation. The Martin Next Generation Solar Energy Center covers two square kilometers, pairing 190,000 solar thermal collectors with an existing combined cycle natural gas power plant.

CSP is becoming a more attractive investment

CSP Utility Plant

CSP (Concentrated Solar Power) plants have very low operating costs because of their fuel independence. About 80 percent of the investment costs are spent on construction and debt pay-off. The required investment for a given project, of course, depends on its scale but also on local infrastructure, grid connection and project development expenses. Finally, the solar irradiation is of great importance as it determines to a large extent the efficiency of the plant. [read full article]
