The larger the AWG number or wire gauge, the smaller the physical size of the wire. The smallest AWG size is 40 and the largest is 0000 (4/0). AWG general rules of thumb - for every 6 gauge decrease, the wire diameter doubles and for every 3 gauge decrease, the cross sectional area doubles.

>_The diameter information in the table applies to solid wires,
>_Stranded wires are calculated by calculating the equivalent cross sectional copper area,
>_Fusing Current (melting wire) is estimated based on 25°C ambient temperature,
>_The table below assumes DC, or AC frequencies equal to or less than 60 Hz, and does not take skin effect into account,
>_Turns of wire is an upper limit for wire with no insulation.
