How you rate?

The larger the AWG number or wire guage, the smaller the physical size of the wire. The smallest AWG size is 40 and the largest is 0000 (4/0). AWG general rules of thumb - for every 6 gauge decrease, the wire diameter doubles and for every 3 gauge decrease, the cross sectional area doubles.

>_The diameter information in the table applies to solid wires,
>_Stranded wires are calculated by calculating the equivalent cross sectional copper area,
>_Fusing Current (melting wire) is estimated based on 25°C ambient temperature,
>_The table below assumes DC, or AC frequencies equal to or less than 60 Hz, and does not take skin effect into account,
>_Turns of wire is an upper limit for wire with no insulation.

*Exact (by definition),
Conductors larger than 4/0 AWG are generally identified by the area in thousands of circular mils (kcmil), where 1 kcmil = 0.5067 mm˛. The next wire size larger than 4/0 has a cross section of 250 kcmil.
